As someone who was unjustly surveilled for activism as a community organizer with the Black Panthers, I stand in solidarity with Malcolm X’s daughters.   COINTELPRO devastated Black communities. That’s why I co-lead the COINTELPRO Full Disclosure Act.   We need truth and justice.

Ppl act like there’s just one thing that’s been shown to reduce crime. Lining streets with trees & having bright street lights reduce crime. Summer job programs reduce crime. None of those things involve people who beat/maim/kill Black ppl, esp the poor, with impunity. So yeah.

Overturning wrongful convictions forces us to go back to the same court system that failed us and maintain hope that it will provide what it is not well-designed to deliver: justice.

The ability of demagogues & autocrats to surprise, to create a new scandal every day, is their superpower. It diminishes attention to the previous day's transgressions & normalizes them. It slowly numbs the senses, including outrage. Values are the only defense. Hold them dear.

President Biden should immediately commute the sentences of everyone on the federal death row. Wrongful convictions are a feature - not a bug - of our criminal legal system, and this administration can save lives now before it’s too late.

The Presidents change but the same people continue to suffer. That’s the constant we have always known. We will continue to fight to free people from prison today, tomorrow, and until we are all free.

We will stand with marginalized and vulnerable people no matter who is in power or the resistance we face. We will build with our community and work to dismantle the systems that oppress us. Our liberation is in each other.
