The framing of "Do teachers want more pension or more pay?" is completely backwards. Teachers want to be rewarded fairly for the difficult job they do. They want fair pay, and they want to defer some of their earnings so they can live a dignified retirement (a fair pension). What they don't want is CEOs on in excess of £250k a year, running trusts with reserves in excess of £50m giving them the choice between hardship now or hardship in retirement. Let's call it for what it is: a flagrant attempt to undermine teachers' terms and conditions that will undermine the pension for the entire profession.

.@GillianKeegan we think you meant: Every day, Government underfunding of our schools is causing disruption to our children’s education. Children should not have to learn in crumbling buildings, in huge classes, taught by teachers not qualified in their subjects, without textbooks or other resources. I’m announcing I will properly engage with @NEUnion to solve the crisis in our schools. #ValueEducation

@GillianKeegan How about minimum standards? Like schools which aren't dangerous to be in, with enough staff to teach children in classes of less than 30, and the resources to do this with? Basics like being able to afford heating and lighting would be a good start!

Last year, school strikes resulted in 25 million school days being lost cumulatively. Children should not have to suffer a repeat of this disruption. I’m announcing that we will introduce minimum service levels in schools so that pupils get the education they need and deserve.
