It's been a rough few weeks in the SFU Department of Archaeology. We lost our founding chair, Prof. Roy Carlson, at the end of February, and yesterday we lost our primatological superstar, Prof. Birute Galdikas. Birute's life was a remarkable one. Her impact on orangutan research and, perhaps more importantly, on orangutan conservation was enormous. She was also a dearly loved teacher. Every SFU undergrad who took her courses seems to have come away enthused about Birute and her stories from the field. Such an impressive legacy.

@ashleytrubin I am sure your stories are true, and reflects a total breakdown of norms and boundaries. That is the era we are living in. Massive breakdown of boundaries, and bad behaviour all around... Both left, and right, and center. Institutional transformations+ cultural crisis.

Overall, I liked this article, but the idea that data on ideology in departments will embarrass faculty seems misplaced. I think some faculty would brag about their stats.

@HorsmanGeoff There r good principles in game, not new, but fun+ useful. Key concern I have re: street epistemology is when it is a political strategy not educational, when students are taped+ videos are posted on line. Peter Boghossian mocks people on line. Good faith version could be useful

Spectrum street epistemology is a lot of fun—I use it in my classroom and the students really like it! Effective approach to get at why we believe things. I'd like to see more of this in education!

People who dislike Israel should not conflate it with American Jews -just as people should not conflate the PRC with Chinese Americans or ISIS with American Muslims. And (not but) synagogues should not say "We stand with Israel" because it encourages that conflation. It makes congregants less safe but, more importantly, given what Israel is doing, it's morally indefensible. Just learned that the philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas has died. His work on the philosophy of history, moral philosophy, and political theory had a huge influence on me. I don't think any single philosopher has taught me more than he has. RIP.
