sure, there are fans that only care about their own team. but a ton want to bounce around and watch big games around the league -- they just can't when there's so much overlap on most nights. really shitty strategy for a league that feels watching the game is the best marketing!

if the NHL really wants the standard to be 7pm local time AND still get eyes on the game, the schedule needs to be more balanced across the 7-day week. my fucking column:

Dumb NHL scheduling note: the league's full push to uniform 7 pm local starts is pretty close to complete. This season there will be 843 games starting at 7 pm locally, with just 109 starting at 7:30.

Ekblad and Tavares took pretty huge discounts to stay at the place they called home, subsequently giving their team more space to build a champion. Beautiful. This will bring them happiness in the end.
Do you know any other UFAs who prioritize winning and being happy?

@Josh_Khalfin I never expected all that much more from him, but with a good defensive partner I’ve always felt he good be a solid 3rd pair guy

@Josh_Khalfin Though I personally would like to give Z Jones a *real shot* at 3rd pair LHD, I think we all know by now the NYR don’t believe in him
W/that in mind, I wonder *just how cheap* Gryzlczyk & if we could afford it assuming Miller did just a 1 yr

I’ve always thought Gryzlczyk was a ‘nice’ Dman, his avg of missing 14-15 gms a season give me some pause if he’s on your 2nd pair (which I’ve seen some suggest) but completely comfortable w/him on 3rd (last season 1st time he’s played in all gms)

Breath of fresh air on Cuylle front. Still think they should just re-sign Miller to two years, sign Cuylle long-term, and then sign a depth D like Gryzlczyk short-term.

NHL Free Agency opens tomorrow - excited to be part of TSN’s coverage again. Here’s a few things I’m hearing.. -Would be a shock if Marner doesn’t end up in Vegas, and sign-and-trade could happen today (as @FriedgeHNIC reported) -Decent chance Marchand stays in Florida, but Toronto and Utah lurk. Ekblad likelier to market. -Utah, Anaheim not done being aggressive. Keep an eye on Columbus too as a sneaky player -Not expecting issues for Cullye extension with NYR. Don’t think they’ve gotten offers they want on Miller trade. Will look to add forwards cautiously in FA. -NYI and Romanov close to extension (@PuckPedia on it) -Carolina will take swings. Could be front-runners on Ehlers, but there’s competition. They could also be in for a splashy early season player-for-player trade. -Tarasenko and Detroit just weren’t a good fit. Steve Y could use that cap space for a defenseman (they’ve checked in on Miller)

@CJ_Stevenson Everything I *speculatively* heard says the main hitch in negotiations is Giroux wants bonus laden deal but Ottawa’s very reluctant to give out bonus laden deals

Claude Giroux and the #sens have said some things about him staying in Ottawa. Obviously at least one of them doesn't want it enough at this point. With no deal, why wouldn't you go to July 1 if you're Giroux to see if there's more ❤️ somewhere else?

NEWS: The Montreal Canadiens are acquiring Noah Dobson in a sign-and-trade with the New York Islanders. Dobson gets an eight-year contract extension carrying a $9.5M AAV as part of the trade. First to report: @KevinWeekes

@ChrisBottaNHL @mjbeckman1 Has it occurred to anyone that Dobson’s “supposed ask” is simply to force the NYI to trade him & he’ll ask for something more reasonable once he’s dealt?
I’m not saying I *know* this for certain at all but I do think it a realistic possibility

It was a question, not a suggestion. I asked would you trade Ritchie to draft Hagens? Personally, I would not.
But it says a lot about how we as fans view prospects that most of you consider Ritchie untouchable but are primed to celebrate trading Noah Dobson for Hagens.

Sign Miller to a 1 year deal. Use this year as a development year and play the kids and let Mike Sullivan see who he wants to keep. Give Laf the keys to the car, Trade Panarin, Miller at the trade deadline, we'll get a haul! Next summer sign Jack Eichel and go all in. #NYR

Mentioned this in the tracker, but big question is whether the #NYR will find a trade partner for K'Andre Miller prior to the draft. It seems they aren't crazy about what's been offered so far (fairly obvious conclusion, I know), but how long are they willing to wait? They could hold and hope for something better down the line, but that would complicate their expected pursuit of Vladislav Gavrikov on July 1. Cap-wise, hard to figure how they'd fit Miller, Gavrikov and top RFA Will Cuylle. Other teams surely recognize this, which may be making things more difficult. It's going to be an interesting few days...

-lots of solid *speculative* reporting Utah’s next priority is C (after getting Peterka)
-Utah’s pretty happy with their D unit, even though Miller would be improvement over Matta/Valimski

Utah is interesting for a potential Miller trade. Good prospects, young players to potentially swap, and the 4th overall. Especially if Drury wants to get weird and add other pieces.
I speculated on the podcast about Othmann potentially being on the move too.

Most of SJ lock room told management they didn’t want him back, that was how he ended up getting traded to Edm in the first place

I don’t know why anyone is taking Evander Kane, he was not good last year, your taking on a bad cap hit(even if its expiring) and his locker room issues
