Part :1 #OTD In 2015 I was tasked to prepare a huge #leedsichthys plaster jacketed bone block @PboroMuseum who were awarded a grant from the MA Esmée Fairburn Collections Fund to deliver the project. This involved working with @BdfJjl to identify and document the bones.

Check out chalksea.co.uk for Q&A's with Chloe and Alex, Masters students who have worked with our project this year. In those posts they tell us a bit about themselves, their research, and surprising things they've learnt about #Chalk!

It's #InternationalWhaleSharkDay . Listed as endangered, the biggest fish in the oceans today are filter feeders.
But they do still have tiny teeth. This Palaeorhincodon tooth is less than 0.5cm in wide. #FossilFriday Learn more from @Emma_Bernard 👇

Born #onthisday in 1864, Sir Arthur Smith Woodward was Keeper of Geology @NHM_London and a world expert on #fossil fish. @NHM_FossilFish houses type specimens of many #Chalk species he described, including this holotype of the lovely Osmeroides levis. lyellcollection.org/doi/full/10.11…

Depending on what happens in the world in the next few hours, I might be on ITV 6 o'clock news, as part of the feel good story towards the end of the programme.
A fun last minute interview which came up this afternoon 🦈

@Simon_D_Wills @BirkbeckUoL I expect to see you in some pictures waving your arms around or standing with the hip out and arms above your head 🤣

Beautiful exposure of folded Lower Jurassic limestones in the High Atlas. Sadly defaced by palaeomag holes. @BirkbeckUoL undergrad geology trip to #Morocco

#FossilFriday. Teeth of the #Cretaceous shark Ptychodus are common in UK Chalk collections, suggesting an unusal shell-crushing diet. A new paper out this week based on exceptional body fossils from Mexico shows us what these sharks looked like!

@eliachyeTook @Kath_La @BBC_Future I think the focus is recent coelacanths, but was trying to get a few fossil links in there.
English

Had a fun afternoon talking to @Kath_La about #coelacanths with my colleague in Life Sciences, James Maclaine.
Looking forward to reading the finished article on @BBC_Future at the end of the month.

@BryozoanNhm @Palaeonto_Soc Congratulations, Paul. Well deserved!👏🏻
English

Very grateful to the @Palaeonto_Soc for awarding me their biennial medal in recognition of my contributions to taxonomic and systematic palaeontology. My thanks go to all those who put me forward for this honour.

@NHMdinolab Thanks, Paul. I'm now feeling quite depressed. I don't think even hearing Wannabe will cheer me up.

This is depressing to me on several different levels …

In 2024, the release of Wannabe in 1996 is as long ago to us as the moon landing was to people in 1996

Well done to everyone who correctly identified our last #FossilFriday post. These are the scales of a stunning specimen of the #Chalk fish Hoplopteryx lewesiensis from the @NHM_London collections - a #Cretaceous 'slime-head'!

#Cretaceous close-up for #fossilfriday. Any guesses as to which #Chalk Sea fossil from @NHM_London collections we're looking at here? 🤔😉
