🏆 Should wine competitions give judges the option to say that none of the wines in a category deserve a medal?
⚖️ Neal says judges should have the option to vote “none” if no wines measure up.
🏅 In his paper with John Netrower, using “none” lets judges rank the rest underneath it, and when aggregated, the final ranking reflects which wines truly deserve recognition.
💸 Why have some classic regions become inaccessible while others remain within reach for wine drinkers?
💭 Neal explains that his tasting notebooks from 1969 to 1979 show he once drank classified growths and aged Burgundies for modest prices.
🍇 He analysed current availability and prices using Wine-Searcher and his inventory, setting a personal price limit.
🏰 He found that while Bordeaux and Burgundy have become very expensive in recent years, some German wines remain affordable.
⏳ What does it mean for a wine to gain wisdom as it ages?
🍄 Neal says that over the years, his palate shifted from craving fruit to appreciating savoury elements, truffle, and umami.
🥂 He describes certain older wines as acquiring wisdom: they are not brash or in-your-face, but invite you to sit, observe, and have an olfactory conversation as they evolve in the glass.
🍷 Can a wine really “gain wisdom” as it ages❓
