"I grew up in a working-class neighborhood in the rust belt of Michigan. No one in my family flew. Yet, for some reason, I was passionate about anything that flew: birds, bats, bugs, kites. My friend Brian and I had seen a picture of someone hang gliding somewhere. We thought if we built a kite big enough, we could launch from the top of my shed, (me in red) or if I could pedal fast enough, my bike would lift off. Unsurprisingly, we didn't quite get the aerodynamics right. I’m grateful my mother thought to snap a few pictures. “Attached is a photo after the completion of IOE back in November! My Check Airman, PIC Nick Hartsell, and I share a lot in common. We were both born and raised in West Virginia – Country Roads, baby! Both of us attended, graduated and instructed at Fairmont State University. We had jobs at the North Central West Virginia Airport working as linemen, fueling and marshaling aircraft. We took jobs at some small local Part 135/91 operators to build time. “When I piloted my first flight to Europe, my crew flew to Naples, Italy, and Shannon, Ireland. To ensure I made it home on time upon our return to the U.S., the company allowed my crew to ferry the aircraft to my home base, where my Papa and Grandma were waiting to celebrate. My Papa is the reason I became a pilot. Although he is no longer flying, he previously built his own experimental single-engine aircraft and flew it from Buffalo to Alaska. Both of my grandparents now spend their retirement volunteering with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and Young Eagles. “I am currently a First Officer in the Challenger 350, but I was just awarded an upgrade into the Ascend. I recently flew a tour with Capt. Kevin George, who retired at the end of March. Capt. George is a great pilot, friend and mentor. Long story short, I’m a 24-year cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with Leukemia at four-years-old. With frequent travels from Columbus, Georgia to Atlanta for treatment, I’d always see planes landing at KATL and was fascinated by how pilots could find the runway in IMC and land. “I grew up flying gliders in a small grass field in the north of France. (One of these photos is of my dad pre-flighting the tow plane.) "I have wanted to be a pilot since I was five years old. My family was moving to Australia in the summer of 1975. It was the first time I had ridden on an airplane. Back then, kids were welcomed into the flight deck to take pictures with the pilots and to ask questions. On this particular trip, the captain pushed his seat all the way back and let me sit in it while wearing his pilot’s hat. I wasn’t allowed to touch anything, of course, but I was enthralled by the view and all buttons and switches. That was the moment I was bitten by the aviation bug. I told everyone I knew, and some I didn’t, that I was going to be a pilot when I grew up – and I never wavered. I have always known I wanted to be a pilot.
