The 6th Conference of Clinical Scientists Successfully Conducted The National M.Sc Medical Teachers' Association (NMMTA) successfully conducted its 6th Conference of Clinical Scientists on Research in Basic Medical Sciences on 17th August 2025 in Bengaluru. The association extends its sincere gratitude to all delegates, guest speakers, invitees, and sponsors for their valuable contributions, which led to the successful conduct of the event. We look forward to even greater participation in future conferences. The program featured four guest lectures, presentation of 17 scientific papers, and the release of three textbooks.

NMMTA holds its pre-conference workshop today in Bengaluru.

On the proud occasion of our Nation’s 79th Independence Day, the NMMTA extends warm greetings to all its members. This day is a reminder of the struggles our forebearers undertook to secure freedom, equality, and justice for every citizen of India. As we celebrate these hard-won rights, we also reflect on the challenges that remain within our own academic and professional spheres. We look forward to the day when the shadow of academic apartheid is lifted - when prejudice against non-doctors in teaching roles is replaced by mutual respect, and when merit, knowledge, and commitment are valued above titles alone. In that future, all educators, regardless of their qualifications, will work side by side with equal opportunity, dignity, and purpose in advancing medical education. Happy Independence Day!

It has come to our attention via social media that a certain individual has sought information from the UGC regarding the recognition of M.Sc. (Medical) courses in the country, and the UGC stated that it does not approve the courses. It must be clarified here that the UGC’s role is to specify the degrees and their nomenclature; not to approve individual courses. Approval and conduct of these courses fall under the purview of recognized universities. It is the respective Boards of Studies within these universities that approve, regulate, and oversee the conduct of these programs, and ultimately award degrees to successful candidates. People bone-drenched in hate fail to understand these distinctions. We feel sorry for such individuals.

Opposition to our participation in medical education has long stemmed from a mindset driven by pride and prejudice, particularly from a section of non-clinical doctors. While this resistance has always existed, the transition from the MCI to the NMC made matters worse. The Undergraduate Board of the NMC adopted a vindictive and exclusionary approach that did not serve the interests of medical education. At a time when qualified MBBS-MD teachers were unavailable and medical colleges were grappling with acute faculty shortages, an unjust embargo prevented the appointment of qualified teachers holding medical MSc./Ph.D. degrees. While NMC's exclusionary policy was being challenged in multiple courts across the country, we believe it was ultimately the Union Ministry (@MoHFW_INDIA) that intervened and steered the course towards justice. We are pleased that the @NMC_BHARAT finally took the right and much-needed decision. After carefully evaluating the current faculty shortages, the projected availability of qualified faculty through postgraduate admissions, and the existence of equivalent academic credentials, the NMC repealed the TEQ 2022 and replaced it with the Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025. It also amended the UG-MSR 2023 to allow, once again, the appointment of teachers with medical MSc./Ph.D. qualifications up to 30% in all five non-clinical subjects-just as it was for decades. We hope this course correction marks the end of policy reversals and unwarranted hostilities. We call upon all stakeholders to move forward in the spirit of cooperation and allow us to work together toward the shared goal of improving medical education in India.

NMMTA has never paused, never stopped. We remain hopeful that the need to struggle for opportunity with dignity will soon be behind us. While some challenges persist, we trust they will be resolved in due course. We are not here to take anyone’s job. We have been an integral part of medical education for decades-supportive, committed, and collaborative. It’s time to stop undermining our contributions. Since its inception in 2013, the association has been actively working for its members. NMMTA will continue to grow, advocate for the rights and recognition of teachers with medical MSc./Ph.D. qualifications, and uphold the values of sincerity and excellence in medical education.

Faculty with medical MSc. or Ph.D. qualifications in non-clinical subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Microbiology have been integral to India’s medical education system since the 1960s. This is neither a new development nor unique to India. In fact, many countries, including the United States, follow a similar model—where the majority of educators in non-clinical disciplines come from a science background, often holding Ph.D. degrees. Why should India be any different? We appeal to the broader medical community to stop viewing or treating us as adversaries or inferiors.
