That was before the Tielemans news emerged in the last hour. Clearly that’s how Villa are financing Manzambi. They needed to sell one to get him. A tough one for NUFC to take, but they knew on Thurs/Fri that he had other PL teams waiting too, so they had prepared themselves. Villa have the added lure of CL football, and he saw the Europa League celebrations in the final when he was playing for Freiburg.

Keith Downie with an update on Johan Manzambi today, saying that despite reports of Villa closing in on the deal he believes that the transfer may be a difficult one for Villa to finance, suggesting the situation might not be entirely over with Newcastle and Man Utd still there. Newcastle had already reached a verbal agreement with both the player and Freiburg on a £49m fee days ago. However, there were underlying concerns that the player was not fully committed to the move to Newcastle and that Aston Villa's recent success—beating his current team Freiburg in the Europa League final—likely left a strong impression on the player and they can of course offer Champions League football. Keith emphasises that Newcastle have already moved on to other targets but that there still might be a question to answer on the Swiss international yet! For me, move on.
