Ulwe Witnesses Ground-Breaking Ceremony for Seafarers Bhavan Seafarers to Get a Place of Their Own. News Tanks | Mumbai The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), working for the welfare of seafarers, performed the ground-breaking ceremony on January 30, 2026, for its “NUSI Seafarers Bhavan and Hostel” project at Ulwe, Navi Mumbai. The complex will provide accommodation, training, meeting facilities, and other welfare amenities for seafarers. A special highlight of the ceremony was when Stephen Cotton , General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), performed the traditional Indian ritual by breaking a coconut and conducting the Bhumi Pujan, making the occasion memorable. On this occasion, NUSI’s General Secretary-cum-Treasurer @Milind Kandalgaonkar said that the project is a major step towards ensuring better social security and welfare facilities for Indian seafarers and their families. The project site is located close to Navi Mumbai International Airport and Atal Setu, ensuring easy connectivity and convenient travel for #seafarers. The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Government of India, in collaboration with the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), successfully conducted a three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) Programme under the Sagar Mein Yog (SMY) initiative from 15th to 17th December at NUSI Holiday Homes, Lonavala. The programme aimed at building a trained pool of instructors to ensure the structured, safe, and uniform delivery of yoga and wellness practices for seafarers, addressing their physical fitness, mental well-being, and stress management needs. The TOT programme forms a key pillar of DGS’s ongoing efforts to institutionalise wellness practices across the maritime sector. The programme was inaugurated on 15th December in the presence of senior officials from DGS and NUSI, reflecting the strong commitment of all stakeholders towards seafarer welfare and capacity building. Expert trainers from the Sri Sri School of Yoga and certified wellness professionals conducted comprehensive theoretical and practical sessions tailored to seafarers’ working conditions.
