Craig Baird - Canadian History Ehx
From 1963 to 1966, The Mighty Hercules first aired on television. It then aired for decades in reruns. As with many animated productions of the time, the voice cast was almost completely Canadian. Hercules was voiced by Jimmy Tapp. Tapp did the voice for 114 episodes after he replaced David Hartmann who only did eight episodes. Tapp was a radio broadcaster in Montreal, and hosted several CBC programs including The Tapp Room and Flashback. He also hosted CTV's A Kin to Win. A member of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, he died in 2004. Gerry Bascombe, who was born in Toronto, voiced Newton for 112 episodes. He also voiced Daedalus. He replaced Newton voice actor Jack Mercer who voiced the character for 13 episodes. Bascombe died in 2019. Canadian Helene Nickerson voiced all the female voices including Helena and Wilhemine. She also starred on Time for Sunday School, which aired on CBC from 1962 to 1966. If you enjoy my Canadian history content, you can support my work with a donation at buymeacoffee.com/craigU

Did you ever see Rocket Robin Hood? It was a show that aired 53 episodes on CBC from 1966 to 1969, and it featured some of Canada's best voice actors! The premise of the show took the story of Robin Hood and moved it to the year 3000. Sherwood Forest became New Sherwood Forest Asteroid. There is Prince John and the Sheriff of N.O.T.T. (National Outer-Space Terrestrial Territories). One of the key animators of the show was Jean Mathieson, one of the first female animators in Canada. She went on to do animation work for Lorne Michaels and Wayne and Shuster. She later became a pioneer in CG animation using the National Research Council's computer in Ottawa. Len Birman provided the voice of Rocket Robin Hood, who went on to have 45 years in stage, screen and radio. Carl Banas voiced Dr. Manta and Titanor. He went on to have roles in the animated productions of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Spider-Man and as various characters on The Raccoons and Babar. Chris Wiggins voiced Will Scarlet, Infinata and Baron Blank. He also voiced No Heart on the Care Bears, and Mysterio in Spider-Man, among dozens of voice acting credits. Little John was voiced by Ed McNamara, who acted in 40 films from 1941 to 1986 and earned the first Earle Grey Award at the Gemini Awards. The show was narrated by Bernard Cowan, known for his work with The Pierre Berton Show, Wayne and Shuster, Spider-Man, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Front Page Challenge. As can be seen with the voice actors, the show had a strong connection to the animated Spider-Man with numerous voice actors taking part in both shows in Canada. As well, two Spider-Man episodes used recycled animation from Rocket Robin Hood. If you enjoy my Canadian history content, you can support my work with a donation at buymeacoffee.com/craigU
