Heads up, Southeast Alaska! The vernal, or spring, equinox occurs tomorrow morning, March 20th, at 6:45 AM. This marks the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, and it means we will see nearly equal daytime and nighttime hours across the world.

Recent snows has raised the total through the end of the day of 3/18. The current total for the Juneau Airport is 181.7 inches, which has them in 4th place. March's snowfall is also 4th snowiest on record, with 49.7 inches. The snowiest March was 2007 when 62.7 inches fell.#akwx

Stronger bands of snow moving through Juneau overnight have necessitated the issuance of a winter storm warning. Heavier snow totals are expected through early Thursday morning before more 'normal' snow showers resume. #akwx

Showers are expected to continue through the latter half of the week, though some locations may see a break before another more organized system is expected to move in over the weekend. #akwx

This is corroborated by the radar loop, showing where precipitating showers are moving onshore. The last attachment is a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image of wind speeds in the Gulf, showing elevated wind speeds associated with the showers as they move through.

Widespread showers continue to move over the panhandle today, bringing intermittent moderate to heavy snowfall and gusty winds as they pass over.

Wondering how much snow has fallen in the Juneau area this year? ANSWER: 170.1 inches as of March 16. Juneau still has a ways to go to reach the snowiest year of 1964-65, but it seems we are not done just yet with snow in the forecast for the next handful of days. #akwx

Winter storm warning continuing to across the northern panhandles morning with an additional 1 to 3 inches. Snow across the Klondike Highway near White Pass looks to be picking up 2 to 4 tonight and early Tuesday so a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued. #akwx

#Snowfall rates have increased greatly over the #Yakutat area early Sunday morning, prompting an upgrade to a warning. New snowfall accumulations between 4am through Sunday afternoon of 5-7 inches. #akwx
