🦔US, German, and Canadian authorities took down command and control infrastructure for four major botnets: Aisuru, KimWolf, JackSkid, and Mossad. The botnets collectively infected over 3 million IoT devices including webcams, DVRs, and routers, and launched hundreds of thousands of DDoS attacks. The Aisuru botnet set a record in December with a 31.4 Tbps attack targeting telecom companies. The operators sold access under a cybercrime-as-a-service model. Authorities identified two administrators but no arrests have been announced yet. My Take Taking down the command and control infrastructure disrupts operations but doesn't fix the underlying problem. The 3 million infected devices are still out there, still vulnerable, and will get recruited into the next botnet unless their owners patch them or replace them. Most people don't know their router or webcam is part of an attack network, and even if they did, updating firmware on IoT devices ranges from annoying to impossible depending on the manufacturer. The scale of these attacks is worth noting. 31.4 Tbps is enough to overwhelm almost any target that isn't specifically built for mitigation at that level. The cybercrime-as-a-service model means anyone with money could rent this capability. The fact that they hit Department of Defense infrastructure shows even well-resourced targets are vulnerable. This takedown helps in the short term, but the ecosystem that produces these botnets is still intact. Someone else will spin up new infrastructure, recruit new devices, and the cycle continues. Interesting look at Iran’s “missile city.” Mostly peaceful missiles, according to leftists. A terrorist regime has a 5-mile-long by 1.5-mile-wide city full of missiles. What President Trump is doing should have been done long ago.

The dissolution of the regime in Iran will not be the end of the ideology. It will simply emerge once again, most probably in Iraq but will however take years for them to re-establish power there.

Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) Commander Rudolph Haykal refused to take orders from the cabinet, which voted to instruct the army to disband Hezbollah. The cabinet then threatened to fire the Maronite Christian Haykal, so where did he go? He visited the head of the Maronite Church, a visit that made him immune to accountability, because a Maronite is expected to stand with his own, rightly or wrongly. This same tribal banding is what Hezbollah hides behind with the Shia. Any non-Shia Lebanese who demands that Hezbollah surrender its arms causes the Shia to rally around Hezbollah to protect their own. If Maronites can defy the cabinet using this archaic tribal tradition, why can't Hezbollah? The problem in Lebanon is structural (and not much about lack of LAF resources). Israel has no other option but to take care of Hezbollah with its own hands. Reliance on the State of Lebanon has produced nothing since 2006.
