A robber thought he’d gotten away clean, but transit officers "smoked him out" quite literally. When officers stopped the man for smoking on a train, a quick investigation revealed he was wanted for robbery and was carrying a loaded firearm.

Band of brothers. The NYPD Pipes and Drums was created in 1960, becoming one of the first police pipe bands organized in the country. These sworn officers perform year-round at events across the city, but the highlight for them is always playing in the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Police Officer Alain Schaberger dedicated his life to protecting others — first as a member of the U.S. Navy and then when he joined the NYPD in 2001. He chose to serve this city at a time when the evolving risks of policing had become painfully clear, but he still did this work with dedication and a quiet professionalism.   15 years ago, Officer Schaberger was killed in the line of duty while trying to keep someone else safe. That is the danger that the members of the NYPD face when they put on their uniform and respond to a call for help. May his memory continue to be a blessing.

New York City turned green today as thousands filled Fifth Avenue for the oldest and largest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the world. From spectators to officers of Irish heritage, the NYPD is honored to celebrate this iconic parade.

Irish pride was on full display up and down Fifth Avenue! Today, we marched in the 265th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, honoring Irish heritage and its influence on the culture of our city — especially within the NYPD.

New York City, meet the hero cops who apprehended two individuals charged with ISIS-inspired terrorism last week. Our entire city owes these officers a debt of gratitude. They are a reminder that the safety and security of New York City rests on the judgment and courage of the men and women of the NYPD. On Saturday, March 7, that was on full display. When two IEDs were ignited in the middle of a crowded protest, these officers didn’t step back. They stepped forward without hesitation and without regard for their own safety. They acted on instinct and training to protect people they did not know and would likely never meet. Moments like that remind us what policing truly requires.

In 1992, Maria Otero joined the NYPD as an administrative aide. In 2026, she became the first civilian ever to rise from that role to deputy commissioner. Now, she's bringing over 30 years of experience and a passion for helping others to the Office of Employee Relations. bit.ly/474qNnd

When a fire erupted and trapped a woman inside of her apartment, @NYPD19pct officers didn’t wait for help, they took action. Despite thick smoke, they forced open the door and pulled the woman to safety. Thanks to their heroic actions, she is alive today.

Thousands of runners laced up their sneakers for the 2026 @nyrr NYC Half Marathon. New York's Finest finished strong as members of NYPD Running Club secured the Commissioner's Cup for the 4th time in a row, and officers kept runners and spectators safe throughout the race.

Car stop leads to firearm arrest. Our @NYPD75Pct officers pulled over a vehicle for violations and soon discovered a firearm, leading to an arrest. That's one less gun on the streets of East New York.

30 years ago, NYPD Officer Kevin Gillespie was killed in the line of duty while protecting this city. Officer Gillespie was a husband, father, son, partner, and friend whose life had been defined by service. Before joining the NYPD, he honorably served this country as a Marine. He approached policing with enthusiasm, studied the work, and never hesitated to step forward when something needed to be done. May Kevin Gillespie’s legacy continue to guide the members of the NYPD who now do the work he loved, and may his memory always be a blessing.

Auxiliary Police Officers are dedicated men and women who volunteer their time to protect and serve our communities. At their promotion ceremony earlier this week, we recognized these selfless members for their exceptional work and unwavering commitment to keeping our city safe.

This past weekend, hundreds of police officers and firefighters competed in the 49th annual NYPD/@FDNY  5-Mile Run. While FDNY won the team race, Police Officer Timothy Miley took first place overall, finishing with a time of 26:07. Congrats to all the runners!

Saturdays are for the girls, and I spent this morning with 200 of the most impressive girls in NYC. Thank you to the @girlscoutsnyc for hosting me at your annual GIRL Congress and inspiring me with your passion, creativity, and dedication to empowering young women.
