I take this personally. I care deeply about what kind of country is handed to the next generation. That is why I find the Green budget so offensive. Chlöe Swarbrick and the Greens published a budget that takes net core Crown debt to about $278.6 billion. That is about $44.5 billion more debt than the comparison track in their own budget. And that is their polished version. In the real world it would likely be worse. This is what weak leadership looks like. Consume more today. Borrow more today. Promise more today. Then leave the next generation with the bill. Debt is future tax. Debt is future inflation. Debt is future interest costs. Debt is less freedom for the people who come after us. I am not okay with that. Any parent should oppose it. Any person with a brain should oppose it. Our children deserve better than another $44 billion of political fantasy.

Still waiting for the NZ Herald’s Derek Cheng or indeed any journalist in the New Zealand media - to ask CV-TAG Chair Dr Ian Town whether he checked with Ashley Bloomfield or Chris Hipkins regarding the advice he signed off on concerning myocarditis risk in teenagers and didn’t get a response to, before he fronted a press conference alongside Hipkins to promote the Covid vaccination rollout for school children just 12 days later. Dr Town, as CV-TAG Chair, surely had a responsibility to ensure the group’s advice on myocarditis risks was not siloed and reached the Ministers making real-time decisions. Alarm bells should have sounded at any radio silence from Ashley Bloomfield or Chris Hipkins. It seems inconceivable he would not have discussed the issue with Hipkins and Dr Danny de Lore to prepare a consistent response, given how directly relevant CV-TAG’s advice was to the joint press conference.

Something is going badly wrong in the Far North and Local Government Minister Simon Watts is apparently not willing to deal with it. A sitting Far North District councillor, Davina Smolders, has gone on Duncan Garner's podcast and blown the whistle on what’s happening inside council. What she describes is not a minor disagreement or internal politics. It is a fundamental shift in who is actually making decisions. On key council committees, unelected iwi and hapū representatives now outnumber elected councillors. These committees shape what goes to full council including spending decisions, infrastructure priorities, and ultimately the rates bills. That means people who were never elected, who cannot be voted out, and who are not accountable to the public are helping drive decisions that affect entire communities. That is not how democracy is supposed to work. Councillor Smolders has raised concerns, followed the process, and formally called for a Crown Observer to be appointed so there is independent oversight of what’s going on. Local residents have backed her. The Minister of Local Government, Simon Watts, has been made aware. And nothing has happened. If the Government won’t step in when there are credible concerns about democratic accountability breaking down, then what exactly is their job? This won’t stay in the Far North. If this is allowed to continue, other councils will follow. And before long, decisions about your community will be made by people you never voted for. We’ve launched a petition calling on the Government to act and appoint a Crown Observer immediately. If you think decisions about your community should be made by people you can vote for, and vote out, then you need to pay attention to this.
