@gzcl3000 You have just copied the joke the "Kick It Forward" lads made about aeroplanes and converted it to trains. You even had to use AI to come up with the train bits. Totally unoriginal.

"So you like trains huh?" "Yea" "What kind?" "All kinds. Steam, diesel, maglev..." "Top speed of a Shinkansen?" "320 km/h" "Gauge width of standard rail?" "1,435mm" "Well well well, at least we know that if anything happens to us, you're here to step up to control the train" "wait.. do you promise?" "promise what?" "that I get to control the train if something happens to you guys"

If govt gets rid of CGT discount for stocks, the preference for capital return type becomes far more neutral. This should be favourable for companies that do (or can) pay out dividends.

Feels like everyone’s glitching right now… but it’s not random 👇 • High rates + cost of living = pressure • Uncertainty around “what’s next” = panic • Social media amplifies the loudest fear • Herd mentality kicks in fast It’s not chaos — it’s everyone reacting to the same stress signal We’re likely in: Stress → Overreaction That’s where things usually get interesting. #PropertyMarket #InterestRates #Australia #Economy

@respeculator Here is a re-jigged model covering petrol and diesel prices. Fuel prices are WA monthly avgs from fuel watch. I've changed COGS + retail margin to a variable component rather than nominal. (Jan is calc'd to get $65/bbl oil) This lands us at ~$130/bbl. Seems reasonable.

My 2c on paper vs physical barrels: If you start with January fuel prices, take the tax/excise and implied refining margins away, the delta to oil px is your cost of sales. Take March fuel prices and remove all those taxes/costs, you arrive at valuation of a barrel of oil.
Nad tweet media
Respeculator@respeculator

If you assume Jan & Feb refining margins were the same as 4Q25 (~US$12/bbl) given middle east issues started 28th Feb... then March refining margins at $VEA.AX were around ~US$42/bbl....

@teagueinvest @respeculator They deferred planned maintenance that was supposed to occur, could be slight curtailment as a result?

@respeculator production up 10% pcp due to lost time last year though... no higher output (could be a good thing not blowing up the plant!) - begs the question... why arent they getting more output, if not now, then when... and why not now...

@DinoOmero @Potstirrer111 A) You bought a 3 bed, so not a perfect comparison B) Effective tax rates on income and consumption (GST) are far higher today so we need to account for that too.

Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London" is heralded as this tribute to the struggles of the homeless I had a different takeaway. I could feel the contempt Orwell had for what he called the "Tramp mentality". He distinguished himself from their petty theft, lying & laziness

A character like Albanese is exactly who Orwell was writing about. A couple of recent doublethinks: - There's no fuel problem, but make sure tyres are pumped up. - There's no fuel problem, but here's a big press conference about how we secured 1 day's worth. Make it make sense

The story beyond the story here is that this piece was obviously written largely by AI. It has all the usual tells, contrast formulations (“it’s not x, it’s y”), the empty emphases (“that matters”), the overly literary, overwritten symmetry (“stretch to include me, or snap back to exclude me”), and of course the triplets. There is no way the editor did not pick up on this. So why would they still print it? Consider who the author is, look at the subject matter, and then you can probably figure out why they didn’t go back and say: “this is clearly written by AI, and we aren’t going to print it.”

@Emilie_Dye @econoadabsurdam The limit doesn't have to be arbitrary, it could be tied to rental vacancy rates, for instance.

@econoadabsurdam There isn't infinite demand to move to Australia, but I agree that we shouldn't put arbitrary limits on the number of migrants coming in. Let the market for human capital function freely!

@ShitValueFund What would the motive be for them to sabotage it? I can see the motive for Iran to do it, I suppose. More pressure from Aus on US to end the war/blockade now.

@ShitValueFund This ignores the additional demand of gas to coal switching. Don't forget that we are in shoulder season, if the switching is necessary (due to gas tightness) deeper into this year, or even towards the next northern winter, we're gonna see resilient thermal prices

Never saw the appeal of buying Coal instead of O&G with the war. Now coal prices back to $135 a tonne and diesel price has doubled (eating most of the margin gains in recent months). Meanwhile - oil will have sustained demand long after the war is over - to replenish reserves.

Whichever fat cat lawyer advised BRS to pursue his defamation case against Fairfax deserves as much lambasting as any of his critics. Could not simply let sleeping dogs lie. Could not resist millions in fees.
