Bulky akyl substituents enhance solid-state triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion―Triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion is a process in which two low-energy photons are combined to generate a single higher-energy photon. Although this phenomenon is highly attractive for solid-state applications, most candidate systems have so far been studied primarily in solution. Now, Naimovicius, Pun @AndrewBPun et al. report in @J_A_C_S a rational molecular design strategy that progressively enhances solid-state upconversion efficiency through the incorporation of bulky alkyl substituents. By optimizing thin-film morphology, they achieve upconversion quantum yields of up to 1.5%, representing a significant step toward practical solid-state upconversion devices. Full article:
