AFSA Marks International Seed Day by Advancing the ‘SEED IS LIFE’ Campaign
On the occasion of #InternationaSeedDay AFSA calls on all Africans to rise in defense of the seeds that feed our continent. Under the Pan-African banner "Seed Is Life", we begin a three-day campaign to uplift Farmer-Managed Seed Systems (#FMSS), the backbone of our food sovereignty.
With 80% of Africa’s food grown from farmers’ seeds, our heritage, knowledge, and future lie in the hands of smallholder farmers—yet unjust seed laws threaten to criminalize these systems in favor of corporate monopolies. This campaign exposes the dangerous push for repressive seed laws, plant variety protection regimes, and GMO proliferation that aim to replace Africa’s biodiverse, locally adapted seeds with industrial, uniform, patented varieties.
AFSA reaffirms: Seeds are not commodities—they are culture, resilience, sovereignty, and survival.
Over the next three days, we will amplify farmers' voices, celebrate seed-saving traditions, and warn against the repressive legal frameworks creeping across our continent.
This is more than a campaign, it's a call to action for every farmer, activist, policymaker, and citizen to resist the corporate takeover of our food and reclaim our right to seed and sovereignty. ✊🏿
