Vitold Ashurak was a civic activist and political prisoner from Belarus. In 2020, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison for participating in protests. On May 21, 2021, he died in custody. The circumstances of his death remain highly questionable. No one has been held accountable. The system responsible for this is still in place today. And its representatives are now seeking a seat on the UN Committee on NGOs under ECOSOC — the body that decides which civil society organizations are granted official access and the right to participate in the work of the United Nations.
