At the ongoing FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France, the seven-time AfroBasket champions have delivered strong performances against top international opposition, recording key victories and demonstrating the character that defines Nigerian sport. Earlier this week, I had the honour of representing the Director General of the @NatSportsComm , @BukolaOlopadee , at the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Capacity Building Workshop held on Thursday, 12th March 2026. The workshop, themed “Catalyzing the Future: Strategic Restructuring and Professionalization of Nigerian University Sports,” brought together key stakeholders to reflect on the future of university sports in Nigeria and the institutional reforms required to unlock its full potential. University sports remains one of the most important pillars of national sports development. Across the world, universities serve as critical pipelines for talent identification, athlete development, sports science advancement, and the commercialization of sport ecosystems. Our conversations focused on the need for governance alignment, institutional restructuring, and stronger collaboration between the National Sports Commission and NUGA to reposition Nigerian university sports as a strategic driver of youth empowerment and the sports economy. Under the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE) of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), the National Sports Commission is committed to building a sports system that is structured, professional, and economically impactful across all levels. Strengthening university sports is therefore not just about competition, it is about creating sustainable pathways for athletes, expanding opportunities for young Nigerians, and positioning sports as a viable sector within the national economy. The future of Nigerian sport will be shaped by the strength of our institutions, and NUGA remains a critical partner in that journey. #SportsForDevelopment #UniversitySports #NUGA #RHINSE #NationalSportsCommission #YouthDevelopment #RenewedHope
