Mayor Gailey has done a fantastic job leading the City of Lake Stevens and will leave big shoes to fill. I’m sorry to see him leave but am happy for Brett and his family as they begin their next chapter in Idaho. Please join me in thanking Mayor Gailey for his many years of public service.

At this morning's County Council meeting, my proposal to improve transparency & public awareness around tax increase measures was passed unanimously. I appreciate my colleagues' support of this proposal, which will require formal notification to local news outlets, clear notice on the County Council’s official webpage, and shared information across County Council’s social media accounts whenever an ordinance that would raise taxes is scheduled for consideration.

Today was our annual Civic Education Day at the county campus! It was fun to welcome 150+ students from high schools throughout the area to learn more about county government and how they can become civically engaged. A big thank you to each of the county staff members who volunteered to help with this event and to all of the students/teachers who attended!

Why is housing so expensive? A big reason is the gap between supply & demand. Too many state policies focus on high-density rental apartments instead of homeownership opportunities, which are the best source of economic mobility. Learn more in this week’s 60-second update. Next week, we’ll begin talking about proposed solutions. 🏡

@independent0402 Yes, this tax was approved on a 3-2 Council vote and is currently being collected and spent. If you'd like specific details on spending, feel free to send me an email at Nate.Nehring@snoco.org and I can send that information to you. Thanks!

@NateNehring Speaking of which, any updates on that .1% sales tax increase that was passed in 2022 (I think) that was supposed to fund “affordable housing”?

Today I am introducing a proposal to improve transparency and public awareness regarding ordinances which would impact your pocketbook (via increased property taxes or sales taxes.)   My proposal would require formal notification to local news outlets, clear notice on the County Council’s official webpage, and shared information across County Council’s social media accounts whenever an ordinance that would raise taxes is scheduled for consideration.   “Tax increases directly affect every resident and business in our community,” said Councilmember Nehring. “Our responsibility is not only to deliberate thoughtfully, but also to ensure the public has timely, accessible information about proposals that impact their wallets. This measure is about openness, accountability, and public engagement.”

It was great to join Ms. Schafte’s AP Government classes today to talk about county government and the importance of overcoming political polarization. One of my favorite parts of the job is getting to talk with students, and I was very impressed with this group at Jackson High School!

Today we brought 40 AP Government students from Mr. Natterstad’s classes at Marysville Getchell High School to the State Capitol in Olympia. The students got to meet the Governor and wish him a happy birthday, hear from Senator Lovick, Rep. Low, and Rep. Davis, and also see the resolution they wrote on the topics of civility and building bridges get passed by the State Senate. Grateful to be a part of this work through The Building Bridges Project! 🤝
