I'm slowly becoming convinced that the Land Rover LR3 is the greatest SUV ever made
And by extension, the best (and most underrated) Land Rover ever. Here's why:
1. It's reliable
The LR3 is a North America exclusive, and unlike its identical twin, the Discovery 3, has a bulletproof engine:
The Ford 4.4L AJ V8.
Variants of this engine were used in the Tbird, Lincoln LS, Jaguar XK8/R, with 12 cylinder version going into Aston Martins, and 6 cylinder variants going into the Mercury Sable & Taurus.
As a result, parts and information are widely available. This engine has no known Achilles heel, and the Land Rover guys only complain about plastic coolant pieces failing over time, which can be easily replaced at any hardware store.
The Disco 3 received a horrendous land rover diese which was prone to failure. Not an issue here
2. It's maintainable.
The LR3 wasn't actually designed by Land Rover, it was designed by Ford Europe & Ford America. As a result, it has none of the land rover wiring issues, and actually has a more robust wiring & computer design than most fords of the era. Thanks to all of the dealer tools being released to the public through Bluetooth OBD adapters, owners enjoy pinpoint diagnostics & control over every onboard computer right from the driver seat. They can program keys, manually raise and lower the suspension, and get real-time data. The LR3 has a very tight monitoring system, meaning it will flag and alert on even minor issues, making preventative maintenance easy.
3. It's capable.
The LR3 has a ZF6 automatic with full-time 4wd with a high/low transfer case, and 4wheel manually controllable air ride. Sounds expensive, but air ride shocks are $100 per corner and can be replaced in an hour. The ZF6 is notable from literally every ford truck with an automatic 6 speed, and is very reliable. The LR3 has a very capable terrain response system.
The LR3 tows 7,700lbs and has a factory-installed tow harness that supports 7 pin, 4 pin, and trailer brakes. Simply add your brake, your plug kit, and go.
The LR3 has a lift gate and 90+ cubic feet of cargo when all rows are folded flat. It can fit a full size mattress flat in the back.
4. It's a nice place to be.
The LR3 has every luxury convenience you'd expect from early 2000s luxury SUVs:
Cosunroof, heated seats, 3 sunroofs, a minifridge in the center console, lots of buttons & cupholders (5 total for the front two seats), and all sorts of nice-to-haves, such as HID bulbs, standard fogs, a heated windshield, heated washer fluid, leather interior, exceptional audio with fiber optic cables, and the ability to add an aftermarket touchscreen without removing the old stereo.
5. It's not a jalopy.
Despite using mine primarily for hauling, towing, and hard dirt roads, the LR3 looks like a "nice" SUV and can comfortably carry 6 adults, or 7 if you squeeze. It doesn't look like I'm driving a junk car when I pick someone up from the airport.
It also has a full ladder frame with a full unibody, so it'll take a heck of a crash and come out alright.
6. It's cheap.
Mine was $5500, but you can get them for less. Simply look for "bad transmission" listings. Go check it out. If it will manually shift into 3rd gear but nothing else, the transmission is fine. It just needs a fluid change or a sensor. Buy it for $800.
Most are well-maintained by dealers, but original owners are quick to dump them as they see "major" issues. At about 150k miles, the computer locks down the transmission due to old fluid, so they get dumped cheap as dealers will no longer work on them.
This really is the 00s pre-enshittification SUV and the best that Land Rover ever offered.
A good V8, a good transmission, a great suspension system, 7 comfortable seats, tons of space to haul, overnight sleeping capability, exceptional winter performance, 7700lbs towing
If you have any technical skill whatsoever, this is the best deal on the market right now.
@Nath_______ That’s the joke. “This is probably going to melt” 😆. Although GB10’s are fairly light on power really, they’re like 240W at load. In theory the rack makes the airflow better……in theory 👀
