Honestly, happy 25th anniversary to the absolute undisputed king of the swamp. Shrek dropped exactly 25 years ago today and completely changed the entire animation game. To be completely subjective, as a critic, the middle part of most early 2000s animated movies really dragged for me when I rewatch them now, but the pacing, the soundtrack, and the humor in this one are still 100% flawless. Just wrapped a massive Goku/Gohan/Piccolo/Goten Day movie binge. Seeing the modern DB era back-to-back was a trip. Here is my definitive ranking from the couch: 🐉✨ 👇 🥇 DBS: Super Hero (8.2/10) - Piccolo and Gohan’s bond stole the show. The Goku/Vegeta cutaways pulled me out, but the themes of mentorship and using strength to serve others really resonated with my faith. Peak DB heart. 🥈 DBS: Broly (8/10) - Gorgeous animation. The opening lore chunk really dragged for me, but seeing themes of compassion and chosen family play out with Broly was massive. Best DB action, hands down. 🥉 DBZ: Battle of Gods (7.8/10) - The perfect re-entry. Beerus is hilarious. The party segment really dragged for me, but the underlying message about humility landed perfectly. 🍿 DBZ: Resurrection 'F' (7.8/10) - A fast, flashy slugfest. The army cleanup fight dragged for me, but the hard lesson on pride and teamwork was solid. All gas, less brake. 🗑️ Dragonball Evolution (3/10) - Morbid curiosity got me. Marsters tried, but the film missed all the heart, hope, and self-sacrifice of the original. Completely hollow. April 30th means one thing: it’s the anniversary of the Big Shell Incident in Metal Gear Solid 2. Honestly, Raiden had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. I feel like the narrative of MGS2 still hits so hard for me today with how accurately it predicted modern digital information overload.
