Viajando pelo Caribe entre 1995 e 1996, Adrian Newey observou como havia uma separação entre a área da hélice e a entrada de ar para refrigerar o motor do avião turbohélice em que viajava. Inspirado pela constatação, estudou o conceito e entendeu que esse pequeno espaço separado por um contorno mais cavado, contribuía com a harmonização do fluxo de ar que entrava no motor, separando da turbulência. O mesmo conceito seria aplicável aos carros de Fórmula 1, separando e disciplinando o fluxo de ar em torno do capacete do piloto e a entrada de ar do motor, adotando-o no seu próximo projeto, o Williams FW19 de 1997. Desde então essa solução se tornou recorrente em quase todos os carros da categoria, apenas adaptado às crescentes exigências de segurança. #F1

@TomcatJunkie Definitely dozens of times! When I was in undergrad it was the clip at 3:30 that made me realize coherent wingtip vortices cannot form above a critical angle of attack, because the tip starts acting more like a flat plate than a wing. That clip shows the transition beautifully.

Be honest, how many times have you watched this? I’ve got to be north of 30… If you answered zero you’ve got some soul searching to do.
