#fielddiaries Leaves in #nature can have a weird look due to galls. They are bumps on the leave surface caused by insects/ other organisms. Many of these insects are species specific. Here are typical galls found on leaves of the #Mauritian black ebony ⬇️ 📸@clbaider

We can all agree that there's hope for the Mauritian flying fox as she brings more light on those win-win solutions for fruit growers & bats. 🦇🌳🥭 🧵 2/2 Keep up with Geetika's research & future findings here ⬇️ researchgate.net/profile/Geetik…

Fruit bats have garnered global attention the past few years but microbats like the Endemic & Endangered Mauritian free-tailed bats remain overlooked and understudied thus the value of her current research on the species 🧵 2/3 researchgate.net/publication/35… 📸 Shillah Bunsy

#DYK The Dark Flying fox (Pteropus subniger) also known as the Lesser Mascarene Flying-fox & "Rougettes" went extinct between 1864 and 1873. It was ~130 g in size, fed on nectar & fruits & roosted in tree hollows. Deforestation and hunting were main threats. #BatWeek

Last but not least, meet the Mauritian flying fox (Pteropus niger) also known as the Mauritius fruit bat. It used to occur on Rodrigues and was also locally extinct in Reunion where a few individual have been observed. It's listed as Endangered. 6/n 📸 Jacques De Speville

Meet a unique species that is unfortunately gone forever. But let's not forget it. Pteropus subniger also known as the dark flying fox was a frugivorous bat that used to occur on all three mascarene islands. 5/n #ExtinctIsForever #extinction
