#OTD in 1917, the Navy broke with convention of the era by authorizing women to enroll in the Naval Reserve with pay and benefits equal to men of the same rank. Women who enlisted in the Naval Reserve were also recognized as veterans after the war.

#OTD in 1915, HMS Dreadnought became the only battleship to sink a submarine whe she rammed SM U-29 near the Pentland Firth. Though Dreadnought's design is credited with revolutionizing sea power, the sinking of SM U-29 was the only significant action of the battleship's career.
