#OTD in 1941, HMS Hood exploded and sank after being hit by a salvo fired by Bismarck from 9 miles away. Only three sailors from Hood's crew of 1418 survived. This photo taken from Prinz Eugen shows Hood exploding in the distance with HMS Prince of Wales nearby.

It's National Lucky Penny Day! After the plaque marking the location of the Japanese surrender aboard USS Missouri had become too worn down, each former crew member belonging to the Missouri Association was asked to supply a penny to be melted for a new plaque using the original mold. The coins were cut into slivers to ensure that every member's lucky penny was included in the cast. The new plaque was mounted in 1989.

#OTD in 2012, a shipyard worker started a fire on USS Miami (SSN-755) so he could leave work early. The Navy decided to decommission the sub after estimates for repairs reached $700 million. The Miami joined a short list of U.S. Navy vessels lost since WWII.

#OTD in 1968, USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was lost with all hands. This is one of the last known photos of the submarine. It was taken by USS Tallahatchie County near Naples just prior to the Scorpion departing on her final voyage. CDR Francis Slattery is visible atop the sub's sail. 1968 was a tragic year for submarine services. The Scorpion, the Soviet K-129, the French Minerve (S647) and the Israeli INS Dakar were all lost to unknown causes, taking the lives of 318 men.

The President’s directive provides political momentum. Navy leaders must now explain in immediate, practical terms not merely that the U.S. Navy is great, but why it must remain so. usni.org/magazines/proc…
