🚨📢 Our new paper in @GEC_Journal leverages social-ecological networks and vulnerability theory to explore how self-governance determines climate impacts and adaptive response in small-scale fisheries. (1/6) En español ⬇️ sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

So excited to be joining @ETH_en @usys_ethzh as a TT Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy in Jul 2025! Look forward to building a group (& lots of collaborations!) focused on developing equitable and robust strategies to meet biodiversity & climate mitigation targets🌎🌱

Really excited to share this new paper out in @FishFishJournal!🚨Here, we used vessel tracking data from @GlobalFishWatch to understand how MHW properties (intensity, size, and duration) impacted the distribution shifts of two U.S. pelagic fisheries doi.org/10.1111/faf.12…

Thankful to the @UMaine communications staff for putting together this plain language summary of our recent @GEC_Journal paper, touching upon some of the similarities between fisheries in Northwest Mexico and those in my home system and state. umaine.edu/news/blog/2024…

New paper led by @Nearshore_Tim out in @FishFishJournal 🚨 Here we used a variety of data types and modeling approaches to examine the variability of overlap between five pelagic longline fishing fleets and North Pacific (NP) albacore tuna. (1/9) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/fa…

@TrevorABranch I would follow up with the journal copying your correspondence with the IRB. The journal just doesn’t want to get sued; if you’ve made a good faith effort, followed process, etc. and some other authority made the determination it wasn’t needed that should be good enough.

We did a study, that IRB concluded did not need review because it did not involve human subjects. Submitted to journal. Sent back to us pre-review because did not include a formal review by IRB before the study started. (It involved truthful tweeting about scientific papers)

@DogSandFishGirl It’s really interesting how divisive the reactions are from the folks in my feed that are normally singing as part of the same choir. I’m with you that the ends (raising this set of incentives as a cause for concern and starting a much needed discussion) justify the means.

@matthewgburgess @PatrickTBrown31 As I understand it, the issue is less about political bias and more about a preference for headline grabbing (click inducing) A + B = C narratives, rather than acknowledging the complexity of interactions and feedbacks responsible for many sustainability and/or climate crises

Publication bias is an important problem, in our field and many others. @PatrickTBrown31 provides a brave and honest account of his experience with it that's worth reading: thefp.com/p/i-overhyped-… But, before we get completely down on our profession, there are some nuances: 🧵1/

@TaotaoTasi @MarineBioAlex Maybe there is separate biodiversity lit I am not familiar with, but I would question the utility of focusing on that single metric rather than a broader set of instrumental and relational values.

@TaotaoTasi @MarineBioAlex Check out Kvamsdal et al. 2023 (Marine Policy). Argues 1) depends on who you ask 2) when you bin by theme (lumping warming, acidification, deoxygenating etc. together) climate change outranks exploitation.

@TaotaoTasi Wouldn't we consider climate change a much greater threat to the ocean than fishing?
