What if we could detect groundwater contamination before it happens? Vadose zone research, conducted by scientists at the University of Nebraska Water Sciences Laboratory, makes that possible. By analyzing soil layers between the surface and the aquifer, researchers can predict how contaminants like nitrate move over time, providing communities critical lead time to act.
