UPI and AePS: Paving the Path for a More Inclusive Digital Future India’s digital payments landscape is shaped by two transformative systems: AePS (Aadhaar-enabled Payment System) and UPI (Unified Payments Interface). While both have revolutionised the way we transact, they serve different needs and user bases — together, they are building a more inclusive financial future. UPI, which has become synonymous with fast, mobile-first transactions, continues to be the preferred mode of payment in urban India. From peer-to-peer transfers to merchant payments via QR codes, UPI has truly reshaped the digital payment experience. It recently processed ₹23.95 lakh crore across 17.89 billion transactions — a testament to its scale and convenience. Even with temporary outages across some popular apps in the previous month, UPI’s reach highlights its central role in India’s evolving financial behaviour. But when it comes to true financial inclusion — especially in rural and remote regions — AePS steps in. Designed to provide access rather than just speed, AePS enables users to withdraw cash, check balances, and transfer funds using Aadhaar authentication — through fingerprints, iris scans, or even face authentication — often in areas with no internet, banks, or ATMs. AePS recently facilitated 95 million transactions worth ₹26,618 crore. Its growing usage underscores the importance of last-mile connectivity and doorstep banking in empowering underserved populations. While both UPI and AePS have faced operational challenges — from tech glitches to fraud risks — they continue to evolve with stronger security frameworks, improved due diligence, and regulatory safeguards like stricter KYC norms. These efforts ensure that both systems remain secure, trusted, and accessible to all. Together, UPI and AePS complement each other: UPI drives speed, scale, and convenience in urban centres, while AePS brings dignity, access, and empowerment to rural India.
