‘This is why you lost’ is a pretty rich cop-out from people trying to launder a bad deal into a victory lap. Harper signed the original bridge arrangement but you conveniently left out that he was out of office three years later and that Trudeau spent a decade keeping the thing alive as was and fully funded (and overbudgeted). Carney is the one now presiding over a revised toll profit scheme that delays Canada being made whole. If the best defense to this is partisan smugness, it usually means complete inability to defend the actual economics of what has transpired.
ForMYCanada@ForMYCanada

You know, I wasn't going to snark on this, but you need an education. Please, let's review who signed Canada up to spend $6.4 billion on the Gordie Howe International Bridge without any guarantee of when, or even if, we'd recover the investment. It wasn't Mark Carney. The agreement was negotiated and signed under Stephen Harper's Conservative government. Canada agreed to finance construction because the Michigan Legislature refused to appropriate the money. In exchange, Canada receives the toll revenue until its costs are recovered. That wasn't being "taken to the cleaners." It was the only way to break the decades-long monopoly of the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, which handled roughly a quarter of all Canada–U.S. trade and had become a strategic bottleneck. Today, Canada has a modern publicly owned international crossing that strengthens supply chains, improves border resilience, creates economic growth on both sides of the border, and generates toll revenue over time. If you're going to criticize the deal, at least criticize the government that made it. Conservatives negotiated it. Conservatives signed it. Conservatives defended it. Facts matter more than campaign sound bites. BTW Pierre, this is why you lost the election. This is why you'll continue to lose.

Historical reminder that Hitler helped Franco during the Spanish Civil War by supporting the Nationalists, including the Condor Legion’s bombing of Guernica in 1937. Franco reciprocated by sending the Blue Division of volunteers to fight alongside German forces against the Soviet Union. Spain had extensive economic and political cooperation with the Nazis, including exports like tungsten and other forms of material support that benefited their war production. And the Spaniards flagrant ignorance of internationally accepted fundamental animal rights until at least 2023 seems to contradict with the same country that pretends now to care about "international law" when it comes to Israel.
Hen Mazzig@HenMazzig

At a march in Spain 🇪🇸, the Star of David used to mark the Nazis’ Jewish victims is compared to the Nazi swastika. Jews aren’t Nazis. The Nazis’ central idea was exterminating us. Spain kicked out its Jews in 1492 and was closely aligned with Nazi Germany. So I guess it would be pretty convenient for them if everyone forgot history 🤷‍♂️

Qatar’s human-rights under the Al Thani family watch : systemic abuse of migrant workers, harsh limits on speech and assembly, discrimination against women and sexual minorities, and persistent terror and propaganda media financing. PM Carney: "I'll whitewash this and, instead, extend a polished tribute for what he did during this 'remarkable period'" Unserious.
Mark Carney@MarkJCarney

I extend my deepest condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family, and the people of Qatar on the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.   He led the State of Qatar through a remarkable period of transformation and helped shape its role on the global stage. On behalf of Canadians, I offer our sympathies during this time of mourning.

Shocked to hear of the shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair Festival in Toronto. Our prayers are with the families of the two individuals who passed away, and we hope for a full recovery for those injured. May the police find the monster responsible for this innocent loss of life and bring them to justice.

The part the haters and their sympathizers keep trying to dodge. Different events, same pattern, same target. Call it what it is. When the only common thread is a Jew on a stage, there is nothing subtle about the motive. It's not politics. It's not debate. It's intimidation squarely aimed at Jews for being Jews. And it's been fully normalized in Canada without a shred of hope for improvement without change.
tobi lutke@tobi

“I’ve now been disrupted at a podcast about Jewish entrepreneurs, at the opening of a Jewish community centre, and at a fireside chat about building companies. None of those events had anything to do with politics. The only common thread is me, a proud Jew, on a stage.” Thank you @harleyf for saying it like it is. nationalpost.com/news/shopify-h…

This is lazily thought-out opinion at its finest. Harper accepted the construction risk in 2012 because the economic upside he figured would far outweigh any. Let's get back to Carney 13 years later who campaigned on being the guy who could best "handle" Trump in any negotiations. If the bridge is now opening under more radically altered terms than first established, the relevant question is not whether Harper anticipated every contingency for the next 13 years but why the self-described Trump whisperer let the other side rewrite the monetization terms. Critically think it over instead of checking what the PMO will approve for answers.
Ben O'Hara-Byrne@Ben_oharabyrne

@Fromehtozed How so? Would you have left the bridge closed? At least it’s opening, Harper understood we needed the new bridge but it also left us vulnerable to a shakedown given we were assuming all the risks.

Every Friday I put a Shabbat Shalom message out into the world. Not just for Jews, for everyone. A small weekly dose of positivity, love and gratitude. This week reminded me why it matters. When hate shows up, the answer isn't to go quiet. It's to show up with even more light. So I'll keep posting this every Friday, prouder and louder than ever. Shabbat Shalom, friends ❤️

I’ve been fortunate to meet many dogs and their owners on and off the campaign trail, and those conversations and bonds have been a reminder of how much care and attention people bring to the animals in their lives. As a dog owner myself, the best way to show respect for that bond is not through a staged moment, but through genuine engagement and relating with the people and communities (and their pets) who live it every day.

Thanks for the script. Your comms person is literally just inserting “Muslims” or”Hindus” or “Jews” or whatever else here. How about actually *doing something*. You’re part of a government that has normalized intolerance and performative theatrics, motivated by demographics. It’s not building up Canada as a tolerant home for Canadians, It’s destroying it.
Evan Solomon@EvanLSolomon

The recent rise in Islamophobic incidents across Canada is deeply disturbing. Muslim Canadians deserve to live, work, worship, and raise their families free from fear, intimidation, and hate. There is no place for Islamophobia or anti-Muslim hatred in Canada. We must stand together to protect freedom of religion, reject hatred in all its forms, and build a country where everyone feels safe and belongs.

Once upon a time, these kind of hateful attacks could be viewed as disturbing and unacceptable with full faith that rule of law will prevail and bring a stop to it. In a city overrun with Liberal MPs, Liberal MNAs, and Liberal City and Borough Mayors whom have presided over and emboldened hate and aggression, it's just another normal day. Truly sad state of affairs.

Silence is not an option when antisemitic incidents target our community. I formally notified SPVM leadership by bailiff last month, and the Hate Incidents and Crimes Unit has now opened an investigation. If you witnessed anything or have video, come forward. Accountability must be documented and relentless. @DrewSylver @anastasia_zor

My thoughts are with everyone affected by last week’s tragic shooting in Montreal. Canadians deserve compassion in moments like these but they also deserve leaders who deliver real solutions to help prevent future tragedies.
