Europe has chosen rights without strength, markets without power, ideology over realism. Therefore it’s irrelevant. We need a Europe capable of selecting, producing, and asserting itself. Industry, technology, defense, future. Without this, there is only subjugation.

@FoghJohn @euromaximal I’m advocating this: Brussels should be able to compel everyone to build up the military and to cut benefits if necessary, and also to deploy European troops in every theater. You should also consider that until 1861, within Italy there were actual kingdoms and state entities.

@NeonPrinceps @euromaximal Either Brussels can compel Italy to: "cut benefits and build military" or it can't. Can it compel Italy to deploy troops to fight in the Falklands or not? You extra-national abilities, while trying to retain national sovereignty. Comparing states within a country is different.

A more united Europe is a necessity for the survival of individual European nations. There’s no way each country could survive when hegemonic empires like Russia, China and the US have so much power. Only united does Europe have a chance 🇪🇺

@FoghJohn @euromaximal I know, it’s not easy. But again, every union/confederation does this. I’m Italian, there are similar discussions between wealthier and poorer regions inside Italy, and it’s united since 1861.

@NeonPrinceps @euromaximal I understand your position. Imagine you face economic austerity to pay for a bail out of the bad economic policies of a neighbor country. It is deeply, politically, unpopular.

@FoghJohn @euromaximal We can choose to sacrifice some national interests in order to unite and achieve the power needed to pursue the remaining ones. Or we can choose to sacrifice all national interests in favour of China, Russia, and the USA. It’s not a hard choice. Americans have already done it.

@NeonPrinceps @euromaximal You will have to surrender those national interests to a federal government. Domestically very unpopular. Free-riders spend on domestic benefits, rather than national defense or shared infrastructure.

@FoghJohn @euromaximal China and Russia are a threat to everyone. The USA has been suffocating every European ambition since the end of WWII. We are not talking about border quarrels anymore. There are empires that fagocitate the weak by every means.

Immigration isn’t a solution to anything. It’s like trying to cure an infection in your hand by cutting your arm off. You just replaced one sickness with another. And the original infection is the probably still there.

@FoghJohn @euromaximal Texas and New York are different. A Black New Yorker is different from a WASP New Yorker. Yet they still manage to remain united, despite being far less homogeneous than Europeans. They initially united to repel an external threat. We have plenty of those.

@euromaximal A "United Europe" isn't a new idea. Load of Kings and dictators have had the same idea. Your problem is the Europe is a geography, not an identity. So now the idea is that Germans rule you from Brussels instead of Berlin?

@Microinteracti1 The ideological premise is that a country with checks and balances will always be fair with its weaker allies. Since this premise is ideological, it is inherently wrong.

The issue with the USA is that it is strong, while we are weaker. We must become stronger in order to pursue our own interests, and that is only possible if we acquire strategic independence.

Checks and balances are meant to ensure that those who hold power do not use it against their own people. However, they do not ensure that a country’s power will not be used against other countries in order to benefit its own people.⬇️
