Our challenges: 1: Understand how soil type and biology affect the resistance of exposed salt marsh to extreme wave forcing. 2: Develop methods for mapping such resistance across space and time for any given set of sea level, wave and tide conditions.

We aimed to understand #saltmarsh resistance to #erosion. We wrote a review paper (doi.org/10.1002/esp.49…), which highlighted a knowledge gap on how different substrate properties have a combined effect on substrate strength. #WorldWetlandsDay @CamFilmWorks

Our field/flume data show that the sediment and vegetation type affect the resistance of #marshes to #erosion. We recorded more erosion in sandy sediments and more erosion close to roots and voids. #WorldWetlandsDay @CamFilmWorks

In this paper, we CT-scanned #marsh #soils to create high-res 3D images. Our scans of marsh soils in SE and NW England found that the shape and distribution of roots/voids varies with vegetation/sediment type. #WorldWetlandsDay @CamFilmWorks doi.org/10.1002/esp.51…

As we enter the final day of #COP26, lets hope that the draft declaration strengthens clause 20 on #naturebasedsolutions and delivers on clauses 56-59 to consider the interface between ocean and land as a critical focus of mitigation and adaptation efforts.
