The development time after first crack determines the final balance of flavors. We carefully manage the Rate of Rise to hit our target finish temperature before rapidly cooling the beans to halt all chemical reactions. Science in every cup. (4/4)

As temperatures climb, caramelization occurs and sugars break down. Internal pressure eventually ruptures the bean's structure, causing first crack. This exothermic event marks the transition from the development of acidity to the development of body. (3/4)

The Fundamentals of Roasting The roast begins with the drying phase. We apply thermal energy to evaporate moisture within the green bean cellular structure. Internal pressure builds as water turns to steam, preparing cellulose for the chemical transformations to follow. (1/4) 🧵

If handled correctly, it yields exceptional sweetness & a heavy, creamy body due to the high concentration of complex sugars developed during the slow maturation process at high altitudes. It's a delicate balance of preserving historical genetics and modern roasting science. 3/3

Coffee history: In 1708, the French attempted to cultivate coffee on the Île Bourbon (now Réunion). This isolation created a natural mutation of the original Yemeni Typica. Bourbon produces roughly 25% more fruit than its ancestor but remains highly susceptible to leaf rust. 1/3

If everyone walking the Katy Trail in Dallas is carrying $9 coffee Imabout to drag the extension cord, Brieville, and bag of @Nerd_Roaster out there and be the $5 cappuccino lemonade stand. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I don’t drink Starbucks everyday. I used to drink once a year during the month of November. I stopped drinking it this past November. Spending $9 on a coffee, is not cool. Is Starbucks trying to get into BNPL as well?

This month's bean is from Costa Rica. ☕️ Tasting Notes: A polished cup that opens with a crisp citrus acidity. The mid-palate features a smooth, buttery sweetness that transitions into a clean milk chocolate finish. More here: nerdroaster.co/newsletter

The payoff for this precision is a cup with high clarity and a bright, citric snap. By keeping the process clean and the drying slow, we’ve preserved the delicate malic acidity typical of high-altitude Costa Rica coffee. This is why we're hyper focused on processing methods.

Maintaining a consistent drying curve on a sun-exposed patio requires constant rotation, preventing uneven moisture migration within the bean's cellular structure. That uniformity translates to a more predictable first crack and a wider development window during the roast.

We've roasted Costa Rica beans this month. The beauty of a classic washed process Costa Rican lot is the transparency of the terroir. By removing the fruit entirely before drying on open patios, we ensure the bean's intrinsic density and altitude are the stars of the cup.

@realEstateTrent I start with @Nerd_Roaster beans every month. The aroma alone is fabulous. The grinder and drip coffee maker cost maybe $200 max. But the beans? priceless.

Six thousand dollars. That’s how much my wife and I spent on coffee this year. Feels like it’s time for a nice espresso machine for the house. Recommendations? 🙏

As kid cutting shattercane in cornfield promised myself never have to work on farm. Y/day family & I spent day cutting banana trees off side of Mt to clear ground for coffee plants. If any smalltown kid wondering if cold calls & knocking on doors begging for a shot is worth it…
