Many Kenyans who watch the Safari Rally Kenya every year usually ask, "Can an ordinary Kenyan become a rally driver?" The answer is, YES. But it requires talent, training, discipline, and serious investment. As a Kenyan, to become a rally driver, you start by joining a motorsport club and obtaining a competition licence from the Kenya Motor Sports Federation. This allows you to compete in local events like autocross races, rally sprints, and club rallies. Over time, you can move to the Kenya National Rally Championship (KCB, et al), and eventually aim for the WRC - FIA World Rally Championship. Also, rallying is not cheap. Starting in Kenya will have you spend several millions for a basic rally car, safety gear, and entry fees. That same car will cost you between 4 to 5 millions per a rally event, in terms of paying the crew, damages, fuel & logistics. Imagine: A WRC1 (Rally 1) car, ones you see being used by factory teams cost about 150 million Kenya shillings or about 1 million Euros. The cars are essentially custom-built racing machines with advanced engines, advanced suspension, roll cages, high-performance brakes and transmission, special rally tires, and electronics. Even small crashes or mud-filled stages can cost a fortune in repairs. Back to our question. To make a great rally driver, unahitaji training. Most professional drivers attend rally schools before competing internationally. Among the most popular rally schools are: DirtFish Rally School located in Washington, USA.
