@ephemeracity Waterside would have been heavily developed prior to archaeological mitigation being brought in via the planning system, so a lot of information may have simply been lost… Which makes finds like this extra valuable! Thank you for keeping us updated, it’s been a real treat

@NewForestArch Thank you! I asked Alexei the same question myself about known settlements along Southampton Water, and there isn’t much known outside of the current City centre. Hopefully the BM May be able to identify where it was forged, which may give you more clues (and headaches!)

We said a sad farewell today in Winchester to the (probable) Iron Age Currency bar, identified on here by Hilde at @NewForestArch after I picked it up at Calshot. It has to be photographed by Finds Officer Alexei and the pics sent to the British Museum for identification 👋😢

@ephemeracity Such a shame you won’t see it again, but it’s a find to be VERY proud of. Great piece of info for the historic environment record, enhancing protection & research. Can’t find much else recorded for the Iron Age along that stretch, so it’s genuinely important & a job well done 😊

We won’t see it again as it needs lots of TLC which only a museum can provide, it’s been in the water for a few hundred years and being out of water would eventually make it flake to death! We will be able to look at it online though when catalogued.

@NewForestArch I picked this up on the shoreline at Stanswood Bay (Calshot) yesterday as the tide was coming in. I would love to find out more about it and didn’t know whether you, or any of your contacts would be able to help as I have no idea whether it has age or just junk!

The ancient land of the New Forest has myths and folklore in abundance. Have you heard about the New Forest Coven of Witches who danced naked in the woods, casting a spell on Hitler so he would not invade Britain in WW2? Me neither until this week. Thread 🧙‍♀️🌲 🧵1/10

These rare colour photos from 1942 show Churchill tanks on a training exercise on Wilverley Plain and Longslade Bottom. The #NewForest played an important role in both World Wars. For videos, pics and memories of the wartime Forest, visit nfknowledge.org #Tank #WW2

In 1918 and 1919, the War Dog Training School near Lyndhurst accommodated 200 dogs which were trained to carry messages under battle conditions. It is still possible to find echoes of the trenches used on the open heathland today. nfknowledge.org/contributions/…

Some of our followers may recall the request for help finding the ‘Brenda’ tree, a tree with “Brenda” engraved into the bark. The power of the internet and local help has meant that the tree has been found. We will now add it to our Tree Graffiti record: newforestnpa.gov.uk/tree-graffiti/
