@Eric_Erins Yep. In the 2000's I lived intermittently in Philadelphia's Parker Spruce hotel. I paid cash by the month, no credit check, no lease, no questions asked. A wide variety of people lived there, but that was part of the appeal. No guests allowed above the lobby, kept things orderly.

We used to have these. They were called Apartment Hotels. They’d consist of a single room with a bathroom, housecleaning, a cafeteria and lounges. Imagine being able to rent month to month and not need to furnish an apartment. It was ideal. Nuts we got rid of these.

Lots of people's social & romantic lives could be vastly improved if it was normal for young adults to live in college dorm-style accommodation in city centres until they were ready to set up home properly. Why doesn't this exist? I think there would be a market for it!

@neilturkewitz @JimBondProds @MrEwanMorrison p.s. I believe our thinking was, "How far can we pull people on this question?" Too middle of the road? Maybe. Different context from now. But also: Who mandates it? A big part of the battle, now as then, is swaying public opinion, and publishers, big and small, themselves.

As AI is the ultimate product of a technocratic system, and AI-generated writing and art products of a product, wouldn't the best response for a writer be to step out of this mad system to the farthest extent possible?

An Obvious Truth: The word "literary" applied to fiction, poetry and criticism as often as not really means "bougie."
Assumed refinement, breeding, taste. An art refined almost out of existence.

An argument for a writer not putting all emphasis on reading other writers' books. After awhile, you become a copy of a copy of a copy. Better: sounding like people in the world, and like yourself. Who did Shakespeare sound like? He lived in a largely oral culture.

The thing is, writers can create original work that sounds just like AI. This is a problem. If we read it, we absorb it. I just had this experience: A writer submitted an essay to me. I asked her if she used AI because it read like she did. She said Yes. I asked her to please rewrite the piece in her own voice. She thanked me for the encouragement, and did so. When she came back with the revised draft, it STILL sounded like AI. I asked for another revision. This time, she said she couldn't take it any further. It WAS her own voice, in this later draft. She didn't know how to make it sound more like herself. I believe her. I just think her "own voice" unwittingly imitated AI in this later draft. Point being, this is quite messy & complicated business. Read great literature, so you absorb that, and not the slop everywhere. (Though the slop is legit hard to avoid!)

Given the asymmetrical wealth & power of Silicon Valley co’s, they’re largely able to defeat federal legislation & to keep things bottled up in the courts until they’re too big to fail. User rejection is a core element of achieving reform.

AI aside, every time I read one these commercial fiction books they are waaaay more purple and stuffed with "lyrical" lines than almost anything published as literary fiction these days.

DID editors rewrite her manuscript using AI? Wouldn't surprise me if they did. The problem is having writers at the bottom of the publishing totem pole, subject to the whims of publishing apparatchik "experts." The system is screwed up, and has been for a long time.
