@CynthKallenbach Definitely! The hot water/ethanol extractable fraction correlated highly with our litter quality index. I'd wager that accounts for a decent chunk of the direct litter effect. More work needed to further tease this stuff apart.

What is the origin of this necromass? What about extracellular compounds and direct stabilization of C during litter decay? Does promoting necromass production also promote priming? Key considerations for understanding the buildup of soil C during plant litter decay. 7/7
