Powerful owl action from just after sunset last night (not filmed on a potato, just filmed at distance with a thermal scope through bushes): owl leaves a nest hollow; ten minutes later owl returns to nest hollow.

Everyone say hello to ‘Cheerio’, the second adult male trapped this year! I’m trapping adults in order to assess home range size, foraging distance in relation to maximum daily temperature and roosting micro site selection. Cheerio’s got a good glare.

Squuueeee!!! Floof ball alert the baby powerful owls are emerging from their hollows. This one in a landscape with lots of agriculture. Its mum had a range that covered a massive area to link patches of bush. Those linkages in the landscape are ohhh so important.

Giving nature a chance in our cities is up to YOU! Things you can easily do 1) embrace native plants 2) plant a canopy tree 3) plant out your nature strip 4) say no to rat poisons 5) encourage others to do the same We all need to take collective action. Share the love for nature!

Thread: The first #OA paper from my PhD is out! We found that social media users will engage with images of reptiles🦎 , amphibians 🐸, invertebrates 🐞 and molluscs 🐙 just as much as they will with birds 🦜 and mammals 🐨 mdpi.com/1721644 @Animals_MDPI #consocsci

SUGAR GLIDER IN YARRA BEND PARK!! 😍 I’d heard authoritatively that they were in Yarra Bend - in fact I was looking for gliders last year when I first heard the powerful owl - but I’d given up on them being in my local patch until last night when a friend told me he’d seen one 😊

A massive pile of owl vomit! Trackers on owls can certainly help find well used roosting sites pretty quickly. Anyone for a career in owl vomitology?

Woo Hoooooo! Off heads another powerful owl carrying a GPS tracker. Where will she go? Time will tell. The data will be critical in helping local government plan around her need for habitat.

ALERT! Powerful owls don't generally eat rodents yet in this paper we show 83% of them have rat poison in their livers. Likely explanation possums are eating rat poison and being eaten by owls! Extremely concerning on many levels. New threatening process? authors.elsevier.com/c/1eRxxB8ccudRp
