@BPJSKesehatanRI Indonesia's public health insurance, is in deficit because of smoking. 2019 it allocated between Rp 10.4 trillion (USD673 million) & Rp 15.6 trillion (USD1 billion) to cover costs attributed to smoking, or 61.2% to 91.8% of deficit (Meilisia et al., 2022)

Smoking among Indonesian children is rising - 7.2% in 2013, 8% in 2016, 9.1% in 2018, 10.7% in 2019. Vice Minister for Health, Dr Harbuwono, says 3 out of 4 start smoking under 20. 290,000 people die every year. Dr Harbuwono calls for revisions to the regulations.
