Designing molecules for organic solar cells is usually a slow process, with extensive testing and little certainty about what will work. This work approaches the problem differently by focusing first on the physics, especially how materials absorb light and separate charges, and then searching for structures that match those requirements. The method uses a learned model (a Neural Network) together with evolutionary search to gradually improve candidate molecules. The resulting designs are not only consistent with known physical principles but also move beyond existing material spaces, pointing toward a more targeted and efficient way to discover functional materials. Every step tells a story, and Oreejoy Medtech Pvt Ltd is working to decode it. Rooted in research carried out at IITGN, the startup is currently developing wearable technology that could transform how movement and neurological disorders are diagnosed and monitored. Conventional gait-analysis technologies that study how people walk, maintain balance, and distribute body weight while moving, can cost as high as โ‚น75 lakhs and often require controlled environments, specialised infrastructure, and extensive manpower. Determined to make clinically reliable gait analysis more accessible, Oreejoy developed INSTROLE, a wearable โ€˜instrumented soleโ€™ inspired by systems such as GaitRite and Vicon. Using lightweight printable electronics embedded within everyday footwear, their product effectively brings the โ€˜gait matโ€™ inside the shoe, capturing reliable walking and balance data through a portable, low-maintenance, and affordable solution designed for real-world Indian conditions. During pilot studies, the team witnessed a 75-year-old participant who initially struggled to walk independently, later returning saying he could confidently cross roads and visit the temple on his own. Moments like these highlighted how technology-driven rehabilitation could restore confidence and improve quality of life. Encouraged by such outcomes, and supported by the NIDHI PRAYAS grant and incubation at IITGN Research Park, the startup has expanded its clinical collaborations and research partnerships across the country, including with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, hospitals in Rajkot and Kolkata, and neurologists working in rehabilitation and Parkinsonโ€™s care. There is a common misconception that greenery alone is the ultimate solution to rising urban heat. Trees certainly have a cooling effect, but this new study published in Nature Communications, shows the story is more complex than it seems. Researchers at IITGN studied 138 Indian cities across different climate zones. Using satellite-derived vegetation data, including indicators that measure vegetation density and plant activity, along with explainable machine learning models, the team investigated how urban greenery influences both temperature and humidity. Instead of focusing only on air temperature, they examined the โ€˜heat indexโ€™, a measure that combines temperature and humidity to reflect how hot conditions actually feel to the human body. It was found that while trees and dense vegetation provide shade and lower surface temperatures, they also release moisture into the air through a natural process called transpiration. In already humid cities, this added moisture can sometimes make the weather feel hotter and more uncomfortable. Additionally, cooling benefits of dense canopies weakened much faster in humid urban cores than in drier regions. In some cases, highly active vegetation even reversed the cooling effect by increasing humidity-related heat stress. These findings do not argue against planting trees. Instead, they highlight the need for climate-sensitive urban planning that balances greenery with airflow, ventilation, and thoughtful landscape design to create cities that are not only greener, but genuinely more comfortable for people.
