Scientists have created a flexible material that's a powerhouse: it 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 and even "𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀" 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁! By mixing a special 2D Perovskite crystal, GA₂PbI₄, with a flexible polymer (PVDF), they created an energy generator that's five times more efficient than the original material, producing ~60 volts. The GA₂PbI₄ crystals help the polymer generate more electricity when it bends or moves. Interestingly, this device can also act as a self-powered light sensor, generating electricity without needing a battery. Such materials could soon power wearable electronics, environmental sensors, and wireless devices, using nothing more than everyday motion and light. Art, a medium for expression and channeling emotions, has also found its way into solving real-world problems. A challenge as common and complex as packing irregular objects efficiently may have found 3D Anamorphic Art as the missing piece of its puzzle. When light shines on seemingly random objects placed on a table, their combined shadows can form a clear image, such as a face or a design. From one viewpoint, the image makes perfect sense, but from another, it appears completely different. In this study, researchers from IITGN and Portland State University draw on this principle to develop a differentiable rendering-based framework called RASP - Revisiting 3D Anamorphic Art for Shadow-guided Packing of Irregular Objects. The algorithm aligns computer-generated object silhouettes with the projected shape of the container they need to fit into. By repeatedly comparing with the target projection, object positions are gradually adjusted until the shadows match the targets and fit inside the container without overlapping. This Signed Distance Field (SDF) approach, which serves as a 3D map, prevents objects from protruding beyond the container and avoids invalid placements and collisions. While traditional packing strategies typically account only for basic shapes such as cubes, spheres, and cylinders, the team developed a method that considers the reality of irregular objects. Beyond improving packing efficiency, this system could help in robotics, automated assembly, logistics optimisation, and even the digital reconstruction of broken artefacts. It also opens new possibilities for computational art, where object arrangements are designed to create meaningful shadows. The team includes Soumyaratna Debnath, Ashish Tiwari, Kaustubh Sadekar, Prof Shanmuganathan Raman. Long before cities rose in the Indus region, people living near today’s Dholavira were already harvesting shells from mangrove wetlands on the Great Rann of Kachchh (GRK) coast in Gujarat. Archaeologists studying a deposit of broken shells at Bambhanka (Khadir Island), GRK, found hundreds of shells broken in nearly identical ways. The ongoing research enabled the discovery of nearly 20 such sites on Khadir and Bela islands. This 7,500-year-old coastal community clearly had a system for seafood! The unique patterns on the shells discovered here demonstrate that prehistoric humans carefully and expertly cracked them open for food. Some of the shells also indicate roasting. Together, these shells reveal an early coastal food culture in which communities relied on simple stone tools, skill, and shared knowledge to gather and prepare their meals from the surrounding landscape. “Whether we celebrate or debate AI, the real question for institutions like IITs is not whether to use AI, but how we will help build and guide it.” — Prof Vimal Mishra, Dean (R&D), IITGN. AI Day @ IITGN on February 12, 2026, was anchored in the momentum of the IndiaAI Impact Pre-Summit 2026. The event, supported by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and IITGN’s Centre for AI-driven Innovations, signalled the Institute’s intent to remain at the forefront of AI, rather than a downstream user. Conversations centred on foundational models of AI in India, supportive infrastructure, and embedding governance, safety, and accountability into the system itself rather than retrofitting them later. Framed as a national competency, these issues were examined across the six key verticals: fundamental intelligence, biomedical innovation, infrastructure systems, materials and hardware, AI & society, and strategic technologies. Despite the diversity in discussions, one theme resonated: scalable AI is ecosystem-driven, bolstered by collaborations and long-term institutional alignment. The AI Day celebration reflected IITGN's aspiration to shape how India will develop, regulate, and deploy AI for broad societal benefit. @ANRFIndia | @EduMinOfIndia | @PTI_News | @TCS | @mayank_iitgn | @vmishraiit | @aditmicrosys | @ #IITGN #RnDHorizon #AIDay #IndiaAI #AIInnovation #ImpactSummit #ViksitBharat2047 #DigitalIndia #AIForGovernance #DeepTech #InterdisciplinaryResearch #AIForClimate

Drought is one of the most damaging climate hazards, placing pressure on crops, water supplies, and livelihoods across the globe. For years, scientists have worried about the possibility of several major agricultural regions experiencing drought at the same time. If such events were to coincide across continents, the strain on global food systems could be immense, posing serious challenges to efforts such as Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action). Yet despite rising global temperatures and increasing climate variability, droughts rarely occur everywhere at once. To understand why, researchers analysed more than a century of global climate data to examine how drought conditions emerge and spread across regions. While temperatures are projected to rise, rainfall and soil moisture do not change uniformly. Instead, precipitation varies widely from region to region, leading to very different drought responses around the world. The study shows that large-scale ocean–atmosphere interactions play a key role in shaping these patterns. Climate cycles linked to sea surface temperature changes, such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, shift rainfall across continents. When some regions experience dry conditions, others may receive more rainfall, creating a constantly evolving patchwork of wet and dry areas. At the same time, the research points to growing connections among drought-prone regions, suggesting that the risk of synchronised droughts could increase in a warming world. Understanding these patterns can help guide food security planning, water management, and climate adaptation strategies. The team includes Prof Udit Bhatia, Prof Vimal Mishra, Hemant Poonia, Danish Mansoor Tantary, and Dr Rohini Kumar.
