After 15+ years of being into fitness and coaching 100s of clients… I've learned a brutal truth about the fitness industry: Most content is made to steal your attention, not help you. The basics work. But they're not marketable... So here are the top 9 basics to lose fat 👇 1. You MUST be in a calorie deficit. This is non-negotiable. All the "special" diets with names like: - Keto - Paleo - Carnivore Only work to lose fat when you're in a calorie deficit. There's nothing magical about them for fat loss. If you're in a calorie deficit, you can eat some carbs (and a little junk food) and you'll still lose fat. 2. Eat more protein. It helps you: - Be less hungry - Burn more calories - Preserve and build muscle while you lose fat. Aim for 0.8-1g per lb of bodyweight. If you're 50lbs+ overweight, aim for 0.8-1g per lb of your goal bodyweight. 3. Don't drink liquid calories. Sodas and certain Starbucks drinks have 150-400+ calories. That's as much as a snack or small meal... But it won't make you feel full so it'll be difficult to avoid consuming too many calories. Instead: - Drink diet soda instead of regular soda - Drink black coffee or coffee with a protein creamer in the mornings. 4. Make sure you get quality sleep. The importance of "hormones" and "metabolism" is overhyped in most content about fat loss. But getting quality sleep actually does make a huge difference. - You get less hungry - Your metabolism is a bit faster - You have more energy to work out - You crave junk food and sugar less. 5. Walk more. 8-10K steps a day burns 300-500 calories a day. It's easy, won't exhaust you and won't make you much more hungry either. 6. DON'T cut carbs completely. Carbs help give you energy and maintain hormones like testosterone and thyroid hormones. Plus, if you try to completely give them up, you'll just crave them even more and are more likely to quit your diet. It makes it stick to your diet on holiday or social occasions too... It's not sustainable for most people at all. If you're in a calorie deficit, you WILL lose fat - even if you eat somecarbs. 7. Eat more fruit and veg. Influencers saying the sugar in fruit is bad or veg has too many "anti-nutrients" aren't in touch with the real world and the state of most people's health. 70%+ of Americans are overweight, eat a lot of junk food and basically never exercise. Eating more fruit and veg will definitely make you healthier. These foods are low-calorie and filling which will help you lose weight and they're very nutrient-dense. 8. Resistance train to build muscle. Muscle burns calories at rest which makes fat loss easier. You also look leaner and it reduces your risk of chronic diseases like Type 2 Diabetes. But you only need to train 2-3 hours a week. That's all you need if you have an effective plan. Focus on compound exercises and training close to failure. 9. Be consistent for years - not just a few weeks or months. "Going on a diet" that you find extremely restrictive or taking up a 6+ hour a week exercise routine always fails to help people lose fat AND keep it off for life. You need to have the mindset that you're building healthy habits for life. If you have a bad day or two, don't give up. Just get back to it the next day. If you realize you're in this for life (which you actually are), 1 or 2 bad days mean nothing. The Bottom Line: These basics are all you need to get lean and healthy for life. They don't sound special, novel or particularly interesting... But they are what has consistently worked for me and 100s of my clients. Be careful of fitness and health influencers who make a ton of content but don't post much about the results they've helped people achieve in the real world.
