Freddie studied medicine at the Masaryk University in Brno and qualified as a doctor in November 1936. After the Munich Agreement in October 1938, Czechoslovakia was overrun by the Nazis and thousands of people fled their homes.
At this time Freddie contacted a fellow-doctor friend in England by the name of Louis Finlay who agreed to act as guarantor. Louis Finlay with his father, Professor Adam Fife-Finlay, secured the sum of five thousand pounds to enable the relevant transit visas to be issued for Freddie to leave the former Czechoslovakia.
