Like every open world has some "neat" collectibles that you can find in place of having to find important progression stuff but there is a merit to collecting important gameplay elements that is lost by the current motives of the genre

Imagine in Breath of the Wild at the top of the Hebra Mountain Range there was a collectible that gave you the ability to double jump or some shit and it allowed you to access previously inaccessible areas. More exploration reward plus the satisfaction would be insurmountable

I think one of the primary issues of the 3D Open World game genre and its collective fatigue is that I think they give you too much too early leading to a lack of meaningful progression reward. I think they could be more Metroidvania-esque and it would really spice things up

I'm becoming increasingly worried that I am developing an Annoying Contrarian Take. I am currently fucking with Paper Mario 64 so hard I unfortunately am starting to think TTYD is the worst of the original three. May god have mercy on my soul.
