Orban’s security have tried to stop people filming his massive country estate. The police showed up when I was reporting in his village. That’s because he lives like a corrupt oligarch whilst claiming to be a man of the people.

The Muslim Turks often blinded Christians as a form of torture. This was especially common during periods of massacres and violence. Many unfortunate Greeks remained blind for the rest of their lives simply because a horde of janissaries had passed through their area. In particular, the Egyptian Muslims under Ibrahim became notorious for this atrocity as well. In many cases, severed body parts “adorned” the war collection of the janissary. The pashas would give a reward to every “brave” warrior according to how many ears of “infidels” he brought back. The same warrior would prove his bravery and manliness to his peers by carrying as a trophy a "kombolói" (worry beads) made from the nipples he had cut off from women. After a massacre and plunder, the best "palikari" (brave lad) was considered the one with the longest such kombolói. In 1805–1806, the Turks had unleashed a harsh persecution against the Greeks of the Peloponnese. Turkish horsemen, among other operations, would surround villages and ask the village elders if there was any stranger there. They would then gather the inhabitants, and if they found anyone “extra” (i.e., a stranger or someone who didn’t belong), they would slaughter him without any inquiry into who he was. If the operation yielded no results, so as not to return empty-handed without heads, they would slaughter the first villagers they encountered on their way back. To some Muslims who accused them of not killing bandits but innocent people, they would reply: “It doesn’t matter, they are Greeks.”

Terrible looting, massacres of the Greek Christians, and enslavements that lasted for three days accompanied the capture of Nicosia by the Turks in 1570. The Muslims seized and destroyed everything in their path, even the churches. They cut off the heads of even old men to test their swords, while they dragged others into captivity, especially those they judged could bring them great profit. In the end, they set up a slave market where they sold the beautiful Greek boys and girls. The Turks themselves boasted that their looting surpassed that of Constantinople. After the fall of Famagusta (6-8 August 1571), the Turks stripped the Venetian defender of the city, Marcantonio Bragadin, placed him on a cow, and paraded him in humiliation to the sound of drums and the shouts of the Ottomans. They then threw him down and flayed him alive. They filled his skin with straw, hung it from the mast of the galley belonging to the captain of Rhodes, while they cut his body into pieces and hung them from the ship’s cannons. The galley then sailed along the coasts of Syria, so that the victors could seal their… triumph in this way. In 1571, the Turks completed the conquest of Cyprus. The spoils were enormous. Among other things, they captured many Greek girls, whom they boarded onto a ship bound for the slave markets. Among them was the noble-born Maria the Synkletiki (Maria the Senator’s Daughter), who stood out for her beauty. In order to spare both herself and the other girls the humiliation of being sold, she found a way to set fire to the ship’s gunpowder magazine. The explosion that followed was terrible. All the girls and the Turkish crew perished. She chose death over slavery.

Mining is discriminating against women who don't like long hours in far flung places..."These conditions are central to how mining operates. They disproportionately disadvantage those with caring responsibilities, or people who are not constantly available. " What a surprise. theconversation.com/how-australias…

What a surprise! 😅 I assume the article didn't mention that BHP was investigated for discriminatory hiring and promotion, in favor of women of course. As I recall, the investigation resulted in BHP admitting the practice and stopping it (officially). I'm sure it happens unofficially in other mining companies.
