I disagree with this to an extent, as "time spent backtracking" is as much a penalty as "losing gold" or "rank" can be. By this standard, failing a run in a roguelike, or any Lego Star Wars game, or even the Legend of Zelda or any RPG are not "games", because all you lose out on is time spent and progress.

I have seen a decent bit of denial of the Commander being a self insert.
He is undoubtedly 100 percent a self insert, in the same way the Sensei from Blue Archive is a self insert.
