There is a German term called "guilt-pride". It's essentially the formation of a collective identity by the joining of passed wrongs and the intent to make up for those wrongs.
In practicality, it's the dismantling of an already established identity, mixed with ascetecism and self-deprication.

The Catholic church forbids such things to this day and America was founded by European Christians, not rootless spiritualists.
Deviation from the Church made it possible, that's what connects Protestants, you heretics can't agree on much else.
