In 2013, Alex Lewis believed he had the flu and stayed in bed to recover, but instead of improving, his condition rapidly worsened. His skin turned purple, and he was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered he had contracted a severe Strep A infection that led to septicaemia. Given just a 3% chance of survival, Alex was placed on life support as his organs began to fail. Doctors eventually told him that survival would only be possible if they amputated all four limbs and the lower part of his face, as the infection had caused widespread tissue death. At one point, his condition was so critical that the hospital considered withdrawing life support altogether. Alex agreed to the radical surgeries, which ultimately saved his life. Against all odds, he survived, and in the years that followed, he spoke publicly about his experience, saying he had no regrets and describing that year as the best of his life.
