The holiday park we’re staying on is in near-total blackout. It’s 36°C, so everyone has their air conditioning running, and with around 300 chalets on site — many of them charging electric vehicles before tomorrow’s departure day — the demand has clearly overwhelmed the system. The poor maintenance engineers are taking abuse from all directions, but this isn’t their fault. If you’re going to install EV charging points on every property, you need to upgrade the electrical infrastructure to match. It’s a glimpse of the challenges ahead. Electrification on this scale requires serious investment in grid capacity. Without it, the system will continue to struggle under peak demand Nett zero bollocks will finish the UK

Tell that to the 700 people here who currently want to murder the one maintenance engineer on call. 🤣 We were here at exactly the same time last year, in the same heatwave, staying in the same chalet. No EV charging then. The fact the entire holiday park is currently blacked out rather suggests the system isn’t coping effortlessly when 300 air-conditioning units, hundreds of showers, ovens and around 150 EVs all start drawing power from the same grid at the same time. They definitely didn’t flex this when they installed it 🤣

@NikBoyle Home EV chargers use the same power as a domestic electric oven (3-7 KW). The grid can easily cope, it’s not a question of capacity and more about balancing load. EV charging is best off peak, cheaper too. I say this as a proud owner of a BMW M3 Touring. EVs are not a bad idea.
