These sentences represent the absolute and complete finality of our situation. None of the other thousands of words in these papers matter. None of the caveats, the policy ideas, the "solutions" etc mean anything. Even when presented with the unambiguous truth, so many people get distracted by this or that and will not or cannot recognise it for what it is. Even James Hansen himself apparently can't grasp the appalling meaning of his own research, which speaks volumes as to how susceptible people are to optimism biases. For these people, there *must* be a way out. If it doesn't exist then it has to be fabricated. It's enough to just imagine it. At all costs, reality is rejected. This is today's denialism and it's everywhere. All humanity has left is an attempt to prepare to survive the onslaught as long as possible and reduce suffering. It's all that's left, yet it's everything. This affects me as much as anyone. It's profoundly depressing. But this is the situation we are in and nothing can change it. We're dealing with brutal physics. This really is it. Humanity's luck has finally run out.
