Understanding IV and VIX: Correcting Common Misconceptions Most YouTubers keep sharing incorrect interpretations of Implied Volatility (IV) and VIX. The fundamental misunderstanding lies in causality: these metrics are derived from option prices, not the other way around. The Incorrect Statement: "Today IV is high, so option prices are high." This reverses the actual relationship and misleads traders about what drives what. The Correct Statement: "Today option prices are high compared to normal days, so IV is high." Option prices move first—IV is simply the measurement extracted from those prices. The causality flows from prices → IV, not IV → prices. The Thermometer Analogy: Think of IV like a body temperature reading measured with a thermometer: The thermometer doesn't cause your body temperature to rise or fall. The thermometer simply reads what your body temperature actually is. Your body temperature changes first, then the thermometer reflects that change Similarly, option prices change based on market dynamics, fear, greed, manipulation and demand. IV is calculated from those prices—it's the "reading" of market expectations, not the driver of price movement itself.
